What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at that sky: black storm on the left, cold light on the right, and the windmill sitting right on the seam. For two centuries that golden, dramatic contrast was exactly why half of Europe fell for this painting -the director of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum once called it "the greatest picture in the world." Between 1977 and 1979 restorers stripped off the darkened varnish: the gold vanished, replaced by this cooler, steel-grey sky. The National Gallery now suggests the mill nodded to the 1648 peace. Which sky do you trust more, the myth or the cleaned truth?
