What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at the figure on the left: blue sleeve, green eyes, one hand pressed thoughtfully to his mouth. He seems to watch the scene from outside it, almost dissolving into the foliage. That's Jacob Meyer de Haan, Gauguin's painter friend from the Pont-Aven days. Except by 1902, when this was painted in the Marquesas, De Haan had been dead for seven years. Gauguin brings him back to preside over a meditation between two women, one of them the red-haired Tohotaua. Scholars read three spiritual traditions here: Judaism, Buddhism, Polynesian animism. But before the theory, there's something simpler and stranger: a ghost painted in the same light as the living. At what point does a dead friend stop being available as a model?
