What the museum label doesn't tell you
Gauguin paints a collarless dog, an impossible colour, walking indifferently while two women share an intimate moment in the foreground. The animal is no mere decoration: it moves through the painting by its own logic, oblivious to the human pause unfolding beside it. In the background, tiny figures repeat the gesture of worshipping something we cannot see. Arearea means amusement, yet nothing here moves in haste. What do you think the dog is looking at that we cannot see in the scene?
