What the museum label doesn't tell you
Saint Michael appears armed with lance and scales, the two classic attributes of his role: vanquishing evil and weighing souls at the Last Judgement. But what stops the eye is on the ground: the dragon beneath his feet bears human faces peering out among the scales, with expressions of pain. The contrast between the elegance of the archangel, embroidered and feathered, and that creature with its almost tender features turns victory into something unsettling. The frame, dense with gilded grotesques, encloses the scene like a jewel of goldsmith's work. What is more unsettling — the serene victor or the vanquished with a man's face?
