What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at the music stand: there is an actual score, with staves and French text under each voice part. Someone copied it carefully from a real piece. Yet nobody has ever identified the work or its composer. We have spent four centuries staring at a concert that only ever sounded inside the painter's head. The little owl conducts with total seriousness -in period iconography, owls stand for Wisdom itself- while fifteen species arrange themselves like a court: the large birds at the edges, shielding the small ones at the center, exactly as Snyders liked to compose. A bird of paradise from distant lands mixes in with local sparrows. Was the score ever meant to be readable, or just to look convincingly real?
