What the museum label doesn't tell you
Watch what Francis is staring at: a shapeless glow in a dark sky. In the model this copy follows (the Escorial version), that spot held a floating crucifix, the whole reason for the ecstasy. Here it's been stripped out, leaving just brownish light that explains nothing. The kneeling friar still points upward at that void, his gesture outliving its object. It's a painting that kept the effect after losing its cause. The Prado catalogues it as a mediocre workshop copy, and once you know that, the whole scene starts to feel hollow. Does removing one symbol really undo an entire composition's logic?
