What the museum label doesn't tell you
Nearly nine feet wide for two butchers hacking meat apart. In 1580s Italy, that scale makes no sense for a private commission — unless the painting itself was the sign. It's thought a butchers' guild may have ordered it to hang as a shop marker, which would explain the almost heroic size given to such ordinary gestures: the knife, the hook, the carcass split open. Carracci paints flesh with the gravity of a court portrait, no satire, no wink. Just craft, displayed like a coat of arms. What if the oversized canvas was the advertisement itself?
