Annibale Carracci
Italian painter of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, born in Bologna, a key figure in the classicist reaction against late Mannerism. Together with his family he founded an influential academy of painting, and he is remembered for his mythological frescoes in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, which marked the beginning of the classical Baroque.
