What the museum label doesn't tell you

The man in the center isn't looking at his drinking companions, he's looking straight at you. Mouth agape, eyes wide, mug raised, caught mid-exhale of smoke, as if he'd just noticed you spying. In a way he has. That's Adriaen Brouwer painting himself among his fellow Antwerp painters, all dressed down as tavern drunks. What reads as a rowdy genre scene is actually a disguised group portrait, an inside joke between artists who knew how to paint each other's faces. Taste as one of the senses, sure, but complicity as the real signature.
