Adriaen Brouwer

Flemish painter of the seventeenth century, trained in the Netherlands and active between Haarlem and Antwerp, specialising in tavern scenes and peasant life of a genre and often humorous character. He is remembered for his loose brushwork and his ability to capture expressions and gestures with great vividness, which influenced Rubens and later Flemish genre painting.
