What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at the flower hanging bottom right: already spent, dry, petals gone. Above it, others still stand golden and erect. Van Gogh wasn't painting perfect sunflowers in a vase, he was racing against time, catching each flower head at its own moment between life and decay. That's why the 'yellow on yellow' feels urgent rather than decorative. Painted in a single week in Arles while waiting for Gauguin, this was, by his own account, the work he was proudest of. Can you feel that rush in the brushwork?
