What the museum label doesn't tell you
July 1654: Amsterdam's Reformed Church Council reprimands Hendrickje Stoffels for living with Rembrandt 'like a whore' and bars her from communion. That same year, likely painting that very woman, Rembrandt makes this: no goddess, no clear mythological cue, just a body wading into water, gathering up a shift with both hands, eyes fixed on her own feet. Nothing apologetic about it. X-rays reveal brushwork so loose it borders on reckless, as if painted faster than the city could judge him. Could this quiet, unheroic gesture be his most private answer to a very public scandal?
