What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at the child at the bottom: he's playing with a crown and scepter like they're junk on the floor. That's the detail that unlocks the whole painting. Hercules, muscular and half-naked, stares at those exact jewels with adult hunger. Wisdom, meanwhile, doesn't even glance down: she looks skyward, bathed in light, while the hero sinks into the shadow of dark drapery. Veronese builds a moral physics here, she rises, he descends, and between them a baby treats as trash what one man craves and one woman ignores.
