What the museum label doesn't tell you
Nelly O'Brien looks straight at you without flirting and without apologizing. No saleswoman's smile, no lady's modesty: just a calm, almost bored face holding your gaze while she strokes her little Maltese dog as if it were the only thing in the scene she actually cares about. Reynolds painted her twice for her lover, yet there's no bedroom drama here, just a woman seated outdoors with her hands busy being tender. His biographer suspected something more than sittings passed between painter and model. Looking at that stillness, what do you read: professional composure, or something more personal?
