What the museum label doesn't tell you
Waterhouse paints the instant just before the gesture: the hands pause in mid-air, the bronze jug hangs suspended, and the water keeps falling as if nothing had happened. Orpheus's head, pale among the green leaves, still seems to sing, and the nymphs hesitate between astonishment and the fear of breaking that silence. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1901 and today resides in a private collection, far from public galleries. What holds your attention more, the frozen gesture of the hands or the serenity of the face floating in the water?
