What the museum label doesn't tell you

Look at what she's really holding: not a proper rod, just a stick with a scrap of net tied on, the sort of toy children drag along the shore to catch shrimp. Except the one holding it isn't a child, she's a lady in a flowing white gown, hair pinned up, back turned to us as if the whole scene were a private joke between her and the sea. The ducks don't even flinch, paddling within arm's reach of the net. The real subject isn't fishing at all, it's the light breaking into blue and ochre across the waves, an excuse for the brush to dissolve. Genteel leisure playing at rustic work, or the other way round?
