What the museum label doesn't tell you
She catches you staring, fingers still resting on the keys, as if she'd just turned at the sound of the door. Behind her hangs Baburen's The Procuress, a brothel scene that once belonged to Vermeer's mother-in-law: no casual choice of decor. The light falls from where you stand, not from any window. The National Gallery asks whether this young woman has more than music on her mind. A near-twin Vermeer shows another woman standing at the same instrument, lit by clean daylight. Together they read like two versions of love, one faithful, one for sale. Which one do you think is lying?
