What the museum label doesn't tell you
Fragonard painted Le Verrou as the counterpart to a scene of sacred love, the Adoration of the Shepherds before the Christ Child. Here, by contrast, is profane love: a disordered bedroom, a rumpled bed, and a man reaching for the bolt with one arm while holding the woman with the other. She tilts her head back, though it remains unclear whether she seeks the kiss or flees from it. The Louvre displays it today as a centrepiece of the Sully wing, though its arrival at the museum in 1974 was far from uneventful. What catches your eye first, the hand reaching for the bolt or her face?
