What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look closely and this reads as a fresh devotion: lowered eyes, crossed hands, the blue mantle closing like a shell. But that face already existed. Ingres painted it in 1824, buried among dozens of figures in The Vow of Louis XIII, kneeling at a king's feet. Thirty-four years later he lifted her out, gave her a halo and a gold star, and made her the whole painting. He wasn't inventing again - he was cutting out what he already knew worked. For late Ingres, repetition wasn't laziness; it was the conviction that perfection, once found, doesn't need reinventing. Can an idea have a self-portrait?
