What the museum label doesn't tell you

Look at the frame before the face - that's where the real trick lives. Van Eyck doesn't spell out the sitter's surname, Leeuw, Dutch for 'lion', in plain letters. He drops a tiny gold lion right into the inscription instead. The frame, painted to mimic bronze, speaks in the first person: it tells you when this Bruges goldsmith was born, when the portrait was finished, as if the painting were reciting its own file. Meanwhile his hand holds a barely-there gold ring. All the noise sits at the edge; the center stays quiet. Strange that the most loaded object here is also the smallest.
