What the museum label doesn't tell you
In 1607, Jan Brueghel the Elder painted a scene that appears simple: travellers, carts and a dense forest on the way to some destination. Yet alongside the draught animals pulling the carriage, a horse's skeleton appears, half-hidden among the undergrowth. According to the Met, this is no accident: it is a reminder of mortality embedded within the everyday, the life of labour unfolding right beside a death that everyone ignores. The fallen tree reinforces the same idea. Had you noticed the skeleton before reading this, or had it completely escaped you?
