What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at the white sheet draped over the classical balustrade: it's the brightest thing in the whole painting, hanging like a surrender flag over broken columns. Below it, women wash laundry under the very arch that once carried carriages or processions. The monumental architecture hasn't collapsed into noble rubble, it's been repurposed as a laundry line. To the left, a cloaked figure leaning on a staff just watches, doing nothing, as if guarding a decline he can't (or won't) stop. Grandeur doesn't vanish overnight, it gets rented out by the hour to dry sheets. Isn't that everyday indifference the real subject here?
