The Family of the Infante Don Luis de Borbón
Francisco de Goya, 1784
For now, just to look at
The photograph we have of this work is not sharp enough to print at the quality we want, so we are not selling it for now. We are looking for a better one.

What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look at the far left: that's Goya, brush in hand, painting himself into the scene. Velázquez needed a mirror trick to slip into 'Las Meninas'; Goya skips the trick and just plants himself there, staring back at us. Everyone else is royalty pretending to be ordinary people, don Luis playing solitaire, his wife getting her hair done, a bored kid nearby. Fourteen figures arranged almost like a formal photograph, and right in the middle of that stiff choreography, a painter who decides he deserves a spot too. How often does an artist crash a royal commission this brazenly?
