What the museum label doesn't tell you
Look closer: among blind beggars and barefoot kids stands a man in a yellow coat, spotless white stockings, cane in hand, still as if posing for a different painting. He doesn't belong with the group, and that's the point. Goya himself said he was a foreigner. A well-dressed tourist wandering into picturesque misery, watching (or being watched) as the blind singer performs his gruesome ballad. Compositionally he sits near the center of the pyramid, as prominent as the musician. Witness or imported prop for contrast? This cartoon was meant to decorate a royal bedroom: maybe they needed proof that someone of their own rank also stopped to listen.
