What the museum label doesn't tell you

A detail that almost no one looks at twice: that white dog trotting alongside Tobias, utterly unaware that it walks beside an archangel. Lippi paints it as a silent witness to the biblical journey, without halo or solemn gesture, just a domestic animal that does not distinguish the sacred from the everyday. That indifference makes the moment more human: while Raphael guides with a steady hand and lowered gaze, life carries on as usual at ground level. Do you think Lippi placed it there merely to lend scale and naturalism, or to remind us that the divine passes unnoticed by most?
