What the museum label doesn't tell you
Pissarro arrives at Kew Gardens, London's most exotic botanical garden, packed with glasshouses full of imperial specimens. What does he paint? This: tall poplars, plain grass, and a Sunday crowd strolling under dappled shade. No orchids, no glass domes in sight. In 1892 he made eleven canvases at Kew, and in nearly all of them he chooses the domestic over the exotic - light filtering through trunks, people walking unaware they're being watched. The exotic was one path away. He painted the shadow of an English tree instead.
