What the museum label doesn't tell you

This central panel was long lost among misattributions: it was first published as a work by Gherardo Starnina, and the Duveen Brothers firm recorded it as such before correcting the error. Since the 1960s, the consensus has been unanimous: Agnolo Gaddi. It can be seen in the elegance of the figures and those pastel colours that envelop the Virgin and the twelve angels in a perpetual fresco. The columns that once separated this panel from the side panels were lost over time and had to be reconstructed between 1988 and 1991. How many works hang today in museums under the wrong name?
