What the museum label doesn't tell you
Five cows standing knee-deep in the water, and only one bothers to drink. The rest just stand there, staring off with that particular bovine indifference nobody painted quite like Cuyp. The sky swallows three-quarters of the canvas, clouds heavier than the whole herd, yet all the warm light pools in that narrow golden strip where the animals wait. This was painted right before Cuyp left for the Rhineland, and the Rijksmuseum still uses it as the benchmark against which a similar work of his falls short. Does the calm here feel like a farewell, or am I reading too much into it?
