William-Adolphe Bouguereau

French academic painter (1825-1905), a leading representative of nineteenth-century academicism. He cultivated an idealised style of virtuoso execution, focused on mythological and allegorical figures and genre scenes with children and peasants. He was an influential figure at the Paris Salon and a symbol of academic taste in contrast to the emerging avant-gardes.
