Thomas Gainsborough

English painter (1727-1788), one of the most outstanding portraitists of 18th-century Britain. He also cultivated landscape painting, a genre he personally preferred, combining both registers with loose, elegant brushwork. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy in London.
