Théodore Géricault

French painter (1791-1824), a precursor figure of Romanticism. Known above all for The Raft of the Medusa, he also excelled in portraits of the insane and studies of horses, subjects that reflect his interest in the dramatic and the pathological. He died young, leaving a brief but highly influential body of work.
