Sir Henry Raeburn

Scottish painter of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the leading portraitist of his generation in Scotland. He is remembered for his portraits of Scottish society, executed with loose brushwork and strong contrasts of light, which earned him recognition as the king's official portraitist in Scotland.
