Sanford Robinson Gifford

American painter of the nineteenth century, associated with the Hudson River School and in particular with the movement known as Luminism. He is remembered for his landscapes of luminous, hazy atmosphere, in which light and air play as prominent a role as the subject itself, including scenes of North America and Europe.
