Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes

French painter of the eighteenth century, a pioneer of open-air landscape painting within the neoclassical tradition. He is remembered for his studies of skies and the Roman countryside, made directly from nature, which laid the groundwork for the later development of nineteenth-century French landscape painting.
