Maurice Denis

French painter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a founding member of the Nabis group. He championed a painting of flat surfaces and symbolic colour, removed from naturalistic representation, and was also an influential theorist of modern art. His works often deal with religious themes and scenes of Breton family life.
