Matthias Stom

Matthias Stom was a 17th-century Dutch painter, active mainly in Italy, where he absorbed the influence of Caravaggesque tenebrism. He is remembered for his religious and biblical scenes illuminated with strong contrasts of artificial light, often candles or torches, which dramatise the faces and gestures of his figures.
