Joseph Whiting Stock
American painter of the nineteenth century, specialising in portraits. He worked mainly in Massachusetts, portraying middle-class families and children with the detailed style characteristic of North American folk art. He was left partially paralysed in his youth, which did not prevent him from developing an extensive career as an itinerant portraitist.
