John Russell

English painter and pastellist (1745–1806), a member of the Royal Academy, who specialised in portraits of Georgian society executed in pastel. He was also the author of treatises on this technique and a student of astronomy, an interest that influenced some of his works. He is remembered for the delicacy and precision of his pastel portraits.
