John Quidor
American painter (1801–1881) linked to Romanticism, known for his narrative scenes inspired by the literature of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper. His style, marked by free brushwork and a fantastical atmosphere, departed from the conventional portraiture of his time. Today he is valued for the imaginative originality of his compositions, little recognised in his lifetime.
