John Hoppner

British painter (1758–1810), a leading portraitist of Georgian London, rival to Thomas Lawrence for the favour of the aristocracy and the court. Trained at the Royal Academy, he developed an elegant, luminous style influenced by Reynolds. He is remembered for his portraits of the English nobility, full of pictorial ease and refinement in the treatment of fabrics and light.
