John F. Peto
American painter of the late 19th century, specialising in the genre of trompe-l'oeil. He worked in relative anonymity during his lifetime, and his work was reassessed in the 20th century when his contribution was recognised alongside that of William Harnett. He is remembered for his still lifes of everyday objects painted with illusionistic precision.
