Jan van Kessel the Elder

Flemish painter of the 17th century, grandson of Jan Brueghel the Elder. He specialised in small, detailed compositions of insects, flowers and animals, often with a scientific and symbolic intent. He is remembered for his almost entomological precision and his contribution to the Flemish still-life genre.
