James Tissot

French painter of the nineteenth century, also active in England, initially associated with Realism and close to the Impressionists. He specialised in scenes of elegant social life of his time. He is remembered for his portraits of Victorian bourgeois society and, in his final period, for illustrations on biblical subjects.
