James McNeill Whistler
American painter active mainly in England and France during the nineteenth century, linked to Aestheticism and a precursor of Symbolist tendencies. He is remembered for his portraits and landscapes of subtle tones, arranged as almost musical compositions, and for his defence of art for art's sake over narrative content.
