J.M.W. Turner

British painter of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a key figure of Romanticism and a precursor of Impressionism through his treatment of light and colour. He is remembered for his landscapes and seascapes of dramatic atmosphere, in which the dissolution of forms anticipates later developments in modern painting.
