Gerrit van Honthorst

Dutch painter of the seventeenth century, belonging to the Utrecht school and a follower of Caravaggio's tenebrism, whose influence he absorbed during his stay in Italy. He is remembered for his candlelit nocturnal scenes, a device that earned him the nickname 'Gherardo delle Notti', and for his religious and genre compositions.
