Gerard David

Flemish painter of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, active mainly in Bruges, where he continued the tradition of the Flemish Primitives. He is remembered for his religious scenes of serene composition and luminous colouring, which established his reputation as heir to Van Eyck and Memling.
