Francisco Herrera the Elder

Spanish seventeenth-century painter, active mainly in Seville and considered a precursor of the Baroque in the region. He is remembered for his religious compositions of vigorous execution and loose brushwork, which anticipated stylistic traits later developed by painters such as Velázquez, who was briefly his pupil.
