Ernest Meissonier

French painter of the nineteenth century, celebrated for his Napoleonic military scenes and his small-format genre paintings executed with almost miniaturist precision. He achieved great official recognition in his day and was a central figure of French academicism, though he is valued today chiefly for his technical virtuosity.
