Carolus-Duran

French painter of the nineteenth century, known above all as a portraitist of Parisian and American high society. Trained in the realist tradition and an admirer of Velázquez, he ran an influential studio from which painters such as John Singer Sargent emerged. His work is notable for its technical fluency and compositional elegance.
